Chapter 38

A piercing scream shattered the tranquility of the forest, its echoes resonating sharply against the previous stillness. The sound, laden with fear and desperation, cut through the air, immediately capturing Elliot’s attention. His heart leapt into his throat when he recognized it as Bella’s voice. Instinctively, he surged into action, his feet pounding against the forest floor as he dashed toward the source of her distress. Any thoughts of the concealed doorway faded into irrelevance.

The forest became a blur as Elliot raced through it, his speed remarkable. The raw urgency in Bella’s scream propelled him forward, but frustration at his inability to quickly locate her began to gnaw at him. The forest, dense and disorienting, seemed to mislead him. Returning to where he had left Ava and Bella, he found only their abandoned packs and spears, no sign of them. With each second that ticked by, his anxiety intensified.

Another scream tore through the silence—a desperate cry. “MAMA!” It was more than a cry for help; it was a plea steeped in fear and urgency. Bella’s terror echoed in every syllable, pushing Elliot to move even faster. Amidst his concern for Bella, worry for Ava’s safety also lingered in his mind. Why hadn’t he heard anything from her?

As he sprinted, darting through the underbrush, the forest seemed to thwart his efforts, obscuring Bella’s whereabouts. Frustration mounted with every stride, and just as despair threatened to overwhelm him, one final, desperate scream filled the air: “ELLIOT!”

Elliot’s name rang through the trees like a beacon of hope in the darkness. His heart was pounding, more from the fear of not getting there in time than the exertion of the pursuit. He adjusted his course, heading towards Bella’s voice. It sounded closer than ever. She couldn’t be far from here, he thought.

He frantically searched ahead for any sign of her. Then, amidst the trees to his left, a lone figure in a white suit with a blue stripe stood out, a ghostly apparition against the greens and browns. The ominous figure had removed his helmet and partially undone his suit. The scene unfolding made Elliot’s jaw clench and body fill with rage. As he charged, the last images burned into the back of his brain was the hand over Bella’s mouth and the tears that were streaming down her face.

Elliot was a blur of motion, weaving through the trees and bounding over the terrain with astonishing agility, his focus resolute. As he closed the gap, the man heard his approach. He turned towards Elliot with an arrogant smile playing on his lips and wielding his shock stick with overconfident assurance.

But he continued to charge relentlessly, undeterred by the threat of the weapon. His only focus was the hand cruelly clamped over Bella’s mouth, driving him forward with an unstoppable fury.

As the man poised to unleash the energy blast from his shock stick at Elliot, his face abruptly contorted in agony. Bella, despite her bindings, had deftly maneuvered enough to reach the hunting knife tucked in her belt.
